Out in the cotton fields, corn fields, tobacco fields. In the garden. Bringing timber off a mountain. Cool days, cold days, spring days and August days. Every day but Sunday, and sometimes they went to church. Used so much they knew your voice. Knew gee and ha – right or left. Work and step up. Servants to us. All they ask for was a place to rest and food to eat and some cool water. Many of the men using these mules loved them like brothers. Their strength and partnership kept families alive. The mules helped put food on a table and wood on the fire. They were the heart of people’s farms. Without them the work would have been impossible.
