The Ruby Throated Hummingbird is the only species of hummer in upstate SC where I live. They arrive about mid to late march and stay until mid to late October. I feed, enjoy watching and studying these wonderful tiny creatures. They remind me of flying jewels or tiny treasures. When the number of hummingbirds increase around your feeders, you learn they are masterful warriors. Their long little beaks turn into life threatening swords. The neatest thing to see is when they just hover at your eye level and check you out! You're never sure if you should enjoy the moment or duck so that little sword doesn't take out an eye.
