My blueberry bushes are loaded with berries this year. I know the routine all too well. Keep the birds away, anyway you can! Tin pie pans tied to the bush and waving in the breeze work well. Toy rubber snakes moved around each day give them pause.
Next you gather the berries. Each day you slowly walk around each bush pulling the berries gently into your bucket. This can go on for two or three weeks and even longer. You got to love it to keep up.
Now you “look” the berries as my grandmother would say. Place them on a flat surface on a towel and gently roll them, separating the leaves, twigs, and stems from the berries. Time to wash them in a colander, and next to cook them. Oh, the marvelous aroma coming from that pot!
Also, “coming in” (getting ripe and ready to pick and preserve) are the figs. I love figs! You can just pick and pop into your mouth, or ready them for jam. Much the same as the blueberries.
In full bloom at the same time is the Rose of Sharon. This shrub (or small tree) has beautiful blooms and can vary in color from white, dark purple to pale pink. This is one of my husbands’ favorite flowers because it is mentioned in the bible.
